What are the odds that on the same day? In 13 years, two police cars are stolen Phoenix Police Detective Stacie Derge had only heard of one other report of a possible stolen car.
Tuesday night a police officer responded to an emergency call. He left his car running and when he came back out, he found someone stealing it. The officer was near Baseline Road and 19th Avenue.
About two hours or so later, the car was found about six miles from where it was stolen. It was missing only equipment and paperwork. No weapons were stolen. The police have someone they suspect, but they are not releasing a name.
In a completely different incident, a Mesa officer was hit in the face by a man he was trying to handcuff. The suspect then stole the officer’s car that was left running. The man was later arrested and charged with “aggravated assault, possession of a stolen vehicle and felony flight.â€
Derge said that ideally an officer would not leave their car running, but in certain situations it is necessary.
