A Los Angeles train accident left about 135 passengers injured, 40 of which are in critical condition and at least 25 have been killed. With the number of fatalities reported so far, this crash is one of the worse in the nation in 15 years.

The Metrolink heading for Simi Valley last Friday was carrying 225 passengers when It crashed head into a Union Pacific freight train that was coming into the San Fernando Valley.

Officials are still trying to figure out what went wrong and what caused this massive wreck. The engineer did miss the red signal but it is still not clear how that could have happened. The engineer of the train was one of those who died in the crash. He had at least ten years of experience.

The Union Pacific fright train and the Metrolink 3:35 pm train that goes out of Union Station passes each other near Chatsworth routinely. Before the accident, the Metrolink train was at Chatsworth station and was not in transit.

The single was on and the engineer is responsible for checking this single. Normal protocol is when an engineer sees the signal, he radios to the train conductor to confirm the color of the signal.

It is not clear whether this occurred or not or whether the signal was functioning properly. Further investigation is underway.
