ABC15 – FLORENCE, AZ

An accident on State Route 79 south of Phoenix killed nine people and injured 10 others Thursday morning, according to Department of Public Safety officer Carmen Figueroa.

The highway is now completely open.

As many as 19 people were in a GMC Suburban that went off the road at about 8:30 a.m. on SR 79 nearly 20 miles south of Florence.

The SUV reportedly drove through a wash, rolled over several times and landing on the roof, crushing it.

DPS officials said they believe all the patients are U.S. border crossers and suspected undocumented immigrants.

Survivors were reportedly flown to hospitals in Phoenix and Tucson. Figueroa said all the victims were adults.

Two of the nine victims were women and the other seven were men, according to DPS spokesman Bart Graves,

At least three were said to be in critical condition.
