DUI

Last year on November 15, Manuel Contreras-Galdean, 32, was arrested and charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault connected with the car accident that killed Kelly Tracy, 16.

Tracy, a sophomore at Gilbert’s Highland High School was a passenger in a 1994 Nissan being driven by his brother Matthew Tracy, 17. Contreras-Galdean was driving east on Guadalupe Road and turned left onto Sossaman hitting Tracy’s car head-on. The two teenagers were on their way to the high school to prepare for their performance in the Gilbert Days Parade.

Kelly sustained severe head and leg injuries and died later the same morning of the accident. Her brother sustained facial abrasions, hand injury, and some cracked ribs.

Contreras-Galdean pleaded not guilty to his charges. His blood alcohol level when he was arrested was twice the legal limit. He told police that he has been living in the US illegally for years.

Reports say that the police smelled alcohol when they pulled Contreras-Galdean over as well as saw ’several beer cans’ in his truck. Contreras-Galdean had been arrested at least twice before on suspicion of drunken driving.

Contreras-Galdean’s court date of January 22 will be an initial pretrial court hearing. He is being held at the Maricopa County Jail with no bond set.
