One option for those smuggling illegal immigrants and illegal drugs over the border has just been removed. A couple was arrested on Monday for stealing cars and selling them to drug-runners and human smugglers.

Desiree Canez, 39, and Richard Somoza, 40, had a whole system in place of which they were quite proud of, as reported by Phoenix detectives. Apparently they would target expensive cars no less than two years old. They would also steal documents that they could use to open credit lines and rent cars.

They then sold these stolen private and rental cars to “coyotes” to use. It was perfect for smugglers since the trend is more toward using new cars than trucks or SUVs that are less conspicuous. The couple would sell these cars for as little as $300. They hoped to live off of this revenue and any monies they could pull from the credit lines they opened.

They were finally caught in a Phoenix motel.

An Alamo rental company used the GPS of an Infinity QX56 which was rented by Canez and Somoza nearly a month ago. It lead them straight to the motel where the couple was arrested in connection with eight cases of auto theft.

The couple loved to brag abut what they did so are also being charged with identity theft and trafficking stolen property. They both face felony charges.
