The economy isn’t doing well that’s not new news, but what may be news is an increase in petty crimes. The Tempe police department is concerned that the economy is hitting people really hard and thus they may be more tempted to commit crimes.
Police officials pointed out to reporters just how often people leave valuable items in their cars where it is easily viewable from someone peeking in the window. Tempe Sgt. Scott Smith walked with reporters through a parking garage where it did not take long before they all could see items worth breaking into car to steel. Smith says that “A criminal strike within seconds, seriously, we’re talking within 10, 15, 20-seconds and they can be in your car and out of your car with your belongings.”
Police say that Tempe has not seen an increase in car break-ins, however they want citizens to be cognizant of the potential of these crimes, especially during these tough times. Arizona Robbery Lawyers are seeing an increase in inquires recently.
Officers say that criminals want items that are easy to sell on the Internet or at a pawn shop for quick cash. Items like MP3 players, CDs, purses, and backpacks are targeted items. It is also important to not leave items in the car that have personal information as it may be a potential for identity theft.
