Stealing copper is a pretty well known problem as the street value of copper is so high. Many houses that are abandoned are stripped of any and all copper by these thieves. Tempe police recognize that this is a problem and that it is not going to go away. With the economy where it is, thieves look for an opportunity to make some quick cash, and stealing copper is one easy and quick way.
This week Tempe police literally caught a man in the act of stealing copper off the roof of a Smart and Final Store. It was early morning around 6:30 am that employers of the store caught sight of the man stealing the copper from the air conditioning unit.
The police tried to coax him down but he wouldn’t come. Tempe police had no choice but to use a fire truck ladder in order to apprehend the man.
Tempe Police Sgt. Tim Bulson says “Obviously this is a problem that’s Valley wide, and it’s just a crime of opportunity.”
