Can Energy Drinks Hurt not Help?

Red Bull, Monster, RockStar, anything to get through the day. But you may need to rethink consuming these energy drinks as studies are showing caffeine poisoning is on the rise. Doctors say that it’s not the actual drink that is their concern, it’s the amount of cans consumers have each day. They are also concerned that the people showing up in the emergency room are not the typical older crowd who drink coffee; it’s a younger group.

Dr. Mark Mathurin, an ER doctor at Tempe St. Luke’s Hospital, has treated patients as young as 14 for caffeine-related illnesses. He believes that caffeine is the ultimate mood affecting drug and if consumed in large amounts is quite damaging to one’s health.

Mathurin has been working in the medical field for 12 years and has notice an obvious increase in caffeine related cases. He adds, “You can become very jittery, vomit, anxious and you could start having heart palpitations.”

St. Luke’s Hospital is in close proximity to Arizona State University. Mathurin has noted an increase in these cases coming into his ER during ASU’s mid-terms and final exams. He has also noticed that there is a trend to mixing these caffeine drinks with alcohol. This is essentially mixing a stimulant and a depressant which can cause direct harm to the heart.
